Please join us Friday, May 5, 2023 for an evening of tasty food and storytelling. Our host, Jerry Gleason, will share an overview of Silvermine focusing on the transition from an industrial center to the artists’ community and focusing on the central figures in Silvermine who drew others here (especially Solon Borglum and John Vassos).

The title for the talk is: “Silvermine: An Overview (with Juicy Bits)”

About your host, Jerry Gleason

Jerry Gleason lived in Silvermine for many years. While he was here, he fell in love with the area and its history. He especially liked the artists – all the various types of artists, not just the writers and painters, but the opera singers, the cartoonists, the musicians, and the architects – who had lived here in Silvermine. They gave the area a distinct flavor.

So, he started tracking some of them down and talking about them with his friends. This, ultimately, led to the Silvermine History Dinners that were held at the Silvermine Tavern on a regular basis.

They started off small, but eventually 60 people or more would spend an evening learning about the Silvermine past and enjoying time with their neighbors. Often someone in the audience would even be able to add some personal knowledge about the person or event Jerry was discussing. Everyone had a good time and Jerry often seemed to go out of his way to locate what he called “juicy bits,” aspects of life here in Silvermine that showed what a rowdy, bawdy, ultimately human, group of people lived and worked here in Silvermine.
