Something unusual has been happening at the Silvermine
Tavern. Something historical. It’s the
Silvermine History Dinners.
Several times a
year, at 6:30 on the third or fourth
Wednesday of the month, a speaker presents a talk about
something from Silvermine’s interesting past.
Some of the past topics have included
-
the untold story
behind Robert Flaherty’s Nanook of the North (the first
documentary);
-
the history of Silvermine’s cemeteries;
-
the
interesting life story of Bliss Carman, a Canadian poet
who lived here at the turn of the century;
-
Bernard Baruch’s
connection to Silvermine;
-
and the sad story of Adeline Hawkes, an orphan living in the Silvermine mills in the
1890s.
