NASH (the Norwalk Association of Silvermine Homeowners)
has led an effort to designate three areas of Silvermine
as “Historic Districts.” The “Silvermine Center
Historic District,” which focuses on the area around the
Silvermine Tavern, has been submitted to the Connecticut
Commission on Culture and Tourism and will be moving
up to the National Park Service for a final approval. In a
few months, pending that approval, NASH will be able to
provide plaques for homeowners in the Historic District.
NASH is currently starting the submission process for
a second Historic District (“the Silvermine Avenue Historic
District”) and researching a third Historic District
(“the Perry Avenue Historic District”).
It’s important to note that these National Historic District
designations do not prohibit homeowners from altering
their homes or properties. It simply provides recognition
for such historically significant areas as Silvermine in
the hope that such recognition will increase awareness of
the importance of maintaining its historic character (and,
as an added benefit, it often increases property values).
Congratulations, and thanks, to NASH for its efforts
on behalf of all of Silvermine!
