Silvermine: Home to Artists

Since the summer of 1906, when Solon Borglum purchased “Rocky Ranch,” his home and workshop on what is now Borglum Road has been home to many artists.

Originally these Silvermine artists were known as the “Knockers,” who got together on Sunday to “knock” each other’s work. Over time, the “Knockers” became the Silvermine Group of Artists, which led to the formation of the Silvermine Guild of Artists.

Starting in 1906 and continuing to the present, artists of all types—painters, sculptors, writers, musicians, illustrators, editors, opera singers, critics, and poets—have been drawn to our special river valley.

The “Artists in Residence” Art Show reestablishes Silvermine’s unique relationship with the arts, now 100 years old!

Artists in Residence
5th Annual Art Show

The Silvermine Artists-in-Residence is holding their fifth annual show open now through Saturday, February 23, 2008. A reception for Silvermine residents will be held in conjunction with the SCA’s “Meet and Mingle” party on Friday, February 22. An Artists’ Opening Reception for out-of-area guests was held on Sunday, February 10 (see photos below). Art will be taken down on Sunday, February 24. For information, contact Dave Muessel at 972-3762 or at dmuessel@iglls. com. Use “SCA Art Show” as the subject for an e-mail. Be sure to include your name, address, telephone number, e-mail address, and the medium of your art.

This group of artists is comprised solely of residents of the Silvermine area and provides a forum through which the area’s artists can meet, exchange ideas, and form community ties.

"The Silvermine Artists-in-Residence are unique from other artist groups because they don’t put their work on display to be judged, as most associations and artists will do. Instead, they display their work for the viewers enjoyment", said Colleen Hains, one of the Silvermine Artists.

The most unusual thing about these artists is that they are all your neighbors. Every one of them lives in Silvermine! Enjoy this unique perspective on Silvermine from Coleen Hains - "Resident Artisits Create Art in Historic Silvermine".

The “Artists in Residence” Art Show is both recognition of Silvermine’s unique artistic heritage and a demonstration of its special position today as a thriving home for talented artists.
